3 Practical Steps to Build Your Adaptability Intelligence (AQ)
In our work we see leaders who thrive are those who embrace change as a constant opportunity. Adaptability Intelligence (AQ) is the skillset that allows leaders to lean into the unknown, learn to learn, and create a culture where change is welcomed not feared.

Here’s how you can integrate AQ into your leadership practice:

1. A Learning Mindset
Leaders with high AQ cultivate a "beginner’s mind"—a willingness to learn, experiment, and stay open to new insights. Be intentional about this by setting aside dedicated time for learning each week, where you dive into something new that draws your attention, it may even be outside your immediate field. Approach this time with curiosity, not obligation. Encourage your team to do the same and create a regular space to share what you’re learning.
2. Cultivate Curiosity
A core part of AQ is curiosity. Leaders with high AQ don’t just accept change—they actively engage with it, treating the unknown as a source of potential rather than a threat. When we face uncertainty with anticipation and ask powerful questions it can spark innovation. Encourage such experimentation through regular “Curiosity Labs” judgement-free zones to test new ideas, try out emerging tools, or brainstorm new approaches.
3. Create a Vision of Possibility and Rally Others Around It
A leader with AQ knows that adaptability isn’t just a personal quality; it’s a collective one. When facing change, your role is to guide the team toward a shared vision of what’s possible. Acknowledge uncertainties then focus on the opportunities in the disruption, articulate how the future can look if you all lean into change together. Regularly lead "Future State" sessions with your team to paint a vivid picture of what your organisation can achieve by embracing adaptability. Use real-world examples to showcase opportunities ahead and invite the team to imagine how they might contribute to this future.

Adaptability Intelligence is the mindset that fuels learning, curiosity, and a bold vision for the future. Leaders who integrate these practices into their everyday routines foster cultures of resilience and innovation.
